This body of this tankard is embossed with Christ and the woman of Samaria, a scene from the New Testament (John 4). In the story Christ stopped at a well where he asked a Samaritan woman for a drink of water. She was astonished as the Samaritans and the Jews traditionally hated each other and avoided any contact. Jesus used the occasion to teach that 'Everyone who drinks the water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks the water I shall give him will never suffer thirst anymore', an appropriate theme for a tankard. Unlike the practice with some German tankards, the decoration is embossed directly into the body rather than into a separate sleeve.(26/11/2002) |
