Casket

late 17th century (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

This small casket may have used to hold personal items such as jewellery. It appears to date from the 17th century but it is notoriously hard to place or date filigree work, a technique in which silver wires are soldered together without a supporting background, as it is rarely marked. The enamel plaques on this casket depicting men on horseback or fighting are very unusual for the period. The romantic, historicist subject matter of some of the panels suggests that they might have been made at a later date to the rest of the casket.

Filigree is notoriously hard to place and the enamel plaques on this casket are also very unusual. The romantic, historicist subject matter of some of the panels suggests that they might have been replaced at a later date.
