Large beakers of this form were used as communion cups in the protestant churches of Holland. This example is engraved with personifications of Faith, Hope and Charity (the Cardinal Virtues), while the spiked collar around the base probably represents the Crown of Thorns worn by Jesus Christ at the Crucifixion.

Physical description | With slightly flared lip and a wreath about a third of the way up the body. Cast foot with engraved strapwork, fruit and flowers. Birds engraved on lower part of body, perched on band of scrolling ornament. Engraved with the figures of Faith, Hope and Charity, and inscribed in Latin Fides, Spes, Caretas (sic) |
