Tankard

1741-1749 (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

The unidentified Russian goldsmith of this piece was clearly familiar with Augsburg tankards of the 1720s, on which this one was modelled. He may have been a German immigrant who had settled in Russia. It is playfully engraved with a winged boy watering plants, a bird and a rabbit. The tankard can be dated from the mark of Peter Semenov, the mint master for Moscow between 1741 and 1749.
