Melon, Hero of Lockinge

Photograph
ca. 1895-1900 (photographed)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

The photographs of the gardener Charles Jones were rediscovered in 1981. Many critics and collectors considered that they prefigured the style of the great modernists of the 1920s.

Jones isolated his fruits and vegetables against neutral backgrounds. He used long exposures to ensure depth of field and a full tonal range, including detail in highlights and shadows.

Some people think that some of his compositions have an erotic element. If so, it was surely unconscious - unlike the similar qualities found in the work of such thoroughly self-aware masters as Edward Weston.
