Chatelaine Ornament
late 19th century (made)
Artist/Maker | |
Place of origin |
This disk-shaped chatelaine ornament reveals a mixture of Indian and Tibetan influences in its craftsmanship and design, suggesting it was made and used somewhere in the western Himalayas at the interface of the two cultures. Though the use of turquoise and silver is a traditional Tibetan combination, the ring of garnets, the symmetrical filigree work and the beaded outer edge of this example are Indian in style. Other ornaments or objects such as keys hung from this disk, worn by women at their waist.
