The remains of the ship (the tea-merchant ship Reliance) are shown in the centre of the image being swallowed up by the waves. A group of people are shown in the sea to the left of the foreground, some of them struggling to stay above the waves.

Object history
Le Blond & Co., established between 1840 and 1845, became the first Baxter-process print licensees in 1849. In 1868, a year after George Baxter died, Le Blond acquired 66 sets of Baxter’s original plates and blocks and republished these subjects.
