This is part of the artwork for a new corporate identity for the London Philharmonic Orchestra, designed in 1989-1990 by Neil Svensen and Darrel Worthington of Rufus Leonard Design Consultants. Their brief was to design a ‘mark’, a combination of a ‘symbol’ and ‘logotype’ (an image and a caption), to be printed on all the orchestra’s communication material. These are early sketches for a symbol and may represent the conductor’s head, arms and batons. The final symbol was similar but benefited from a lighter touch. The head became less square and the orientation changed to reflect the way the viewer’s eye moves from left to right.
