Erich Salomon (1886–1944) Cecil Beaton in the Vogue Studios, Paris 1936 In 1927, Beaton signed his first contract with Vogue to supply photographs and hand-drawn illustrations. His early Vogue images provided a counterpoint to the harder-edged approach of American photographer Edward Steichen. Beaton explained: ‘Steichen’s pictures were taken with an uncompromising frankness of viewpoint, against a plain background … my sitters were more likely to be somewhat hazily discovered in a bower or grotto of silvery blossom or in some Hades of polka dots.’ Gelatin silver print Gift of John and Judith Hillelson V&A: E.126-2003 (2012)
