Brief description | All terrain three-wheeled push chair; English, 1998 |
Historical context | Phil Baechler of The Baby Jogger Company of Yakima, USA, claims that he invented the three-wheeled pushchair in 1983 so that he could take his baby son Travis with him while out running: Baechler would certainly appear to have been first in production of the modern three-wheeler. This innovation is really a return to an earlier design: some of the first children's carriages known to have existed in Western Europe were three-wheelers, developed from the basic design of invalid carriages, and later giving rise to one of the most characteristic of the nineteenth century designs, the 'Victoria'. All these earlier examples were for use by children who could sit unaided: younger ones who needed to lie flat were not catered for until the introduction of the cradle-like bassinet prams in the 1880s. |
