This poster by Franz von Stuck advertises the first International Art Exhibition of the Munich Secession. The group was founded in 1892 and was the first group of German artists to secede or withdraw from the exhibitions of more traditional organisations. Von Stuck was the co-founder of this group, and he designed several posters for them. The profile in the poster is that of Athena, the Greek goddess of wisdom. She became a symbol for the Secessionists, as she was a patron of the arts.

'American and European Art and Design 1800-1900' This poster advertises the first International Art Exhibition of the Munich Secession, which was founded in 1892 and was the first group of German artists to 'secede' from the exhibitions of more traditionally-minded organizations. Franz von Stuck was a leading member. The image used in this poster, a head of Athena within an octagonal medallion, was also the emblem of that group, and was based on a model in the Munich Glyptothek. The poster itself, with variations, was adapted to advertise later exhibitions of the Secession.(1987-2006)
