This inkstand is made in the second half of the 16th century in Germany or Italy.
It is in the form of a sea nymph playing a lute, her tails twined round the receptacle for the ink. On the front is a shield with a hound rampant, surmounted by a crowned eagle issuant for a crest (perhaps for a branch of the Bolognese family of Campeggi).
