Bed Cover

1725-1750 (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

Quilted chintz bed covers were very popular in Britain in the 18th century. Although they often feature large trees, this one is in a small floral design perhaps more associated with dress material than bed furnishings. The field and the border are separated by a delicate border that uses the pointed motif more usually found on Indian textiles made for the south-east Asian market, especially those intended for the Thai court. This reminds us that the same craftsmen who were producing floral designs for Europe were also painting very different motifs for other patrons in Asia.
