Place of origin |
Mount Athos is a mountain on a peninsula in northern Greece, but is only accessible by sea. In modern Greece it is now known as the Autonomous Monastic State of the Holy Mountain. There are 20 Eastern Orthodox monasteries there, and the first monks arrived in the 4th Century. It was famous [or notorious] for not permitting women to live there or even visit. The Ottoman Sultans conquered this part of northern Greece in the 15th century, and kept control until 1912. They permitted the Monks to live as they had always done, provided they paid their taxes.
