Ward-Jackson, Peter, Italian Drawings. Volume II. 17th-18th century, London, 1979, p. 86. The following is the full text of the entry. SOLE, GIOVANNI GIOSEFFO DAL (1654-1719) 810 The Holy Family, resting on the flight into Egypt On the back an account of the artist's life written in ink in an 18th century hand; a strip about one centimetre wide has been cut away from the edge of the sheet, slightly mutilating the left side of the inscription; the more informative parts of the inscription read as follows: ' . . Vive felice in [pa]tria e mori circa 1716. AP.J. C.M. I Mst: Arssto.' Pale brown wash over red chalk, with touches of black chalk 10 ¼ x 8 1/8 (260 x 206) D.987-1900 PROVENANCE ? J. MacGowan (Lugt 1496, on the back, very indistinct); Dalton Bequest 1900 LITERATURE Dalton Catalogue, p. 10 (as by ]acopo Maria Giovannini) The inscription reads as though it had been copied from an Italian manuscript by someone with an imperfect knowledge of the language. Dal Sole's dates were 1654-1719, not 1660-1716 as given there. The inscription is mistaken again in stating that he became the pupil of Canuti in c. 1680, because by then, probably as early as 1672, he had left Canuti and was the pupil of Pasinelli. Nevertheless, it can hardly be doubted that the mutilated names . . . seffo and . . . vanni refer to Giovanni Gioseffo, and not to Giacopo Maria Giovannini, to whom the drawing was formerly ascribed. The inscription is correct in stating that drawings by Giovanni Gioseffo are rare; but there are several at Windsor (Kurz, Windsor, pp. 100- 101). A comparison with them suggests that no. 810 is correctly ascribed. The use of a coloured wash in conjunction with red chalk was a favourite technique of Canuti.
