It is a study for St Bruno in the painting of the Virgin appearing to the Saint in the Pinacoteca at Bologna. The saint as executed is different in certain respects, but the fingers spread out upon the chest are a significant detail which is the same in the picture as in the drawing. As Mahon observes, the alterations in the painting make the figure more stable. The picture was painted for the Certosa at Bologna (S. Gerolamo) and Guercino was paid in 1647.
