Object history
The drawing is certainly from the Mantuan school. On the mount, Hugo Chapman has attributed to drawing to Lorenzo Costa the Younger, which is the most plausible attribution. Another possibility is the Mantuan student of Giulio Romano, the artist Giovanni Battista Bertani. The highly finished drawing probably served as a preparatory study for a fresco or a painting.

The text is as follows: MANTUA OR PADUA: mid 16th century 477 David beheading Goliath Inscribed on the back in pencil in a later hand ‘Parmigiano’ Pen and ink and wash; squared in black chalk 12 x 8 ½ (305 x 216) PROVENANCE Dalton Bequest 1900 LITERATURE Dalton Catalgogue, p. 15 (under school of Parmigianino) The drawing appears to have little connection with Pamigianino. Giulio Romano is a more obvious influence.
