The miracle of Soriano
Pen and ink and wash
7 3/4 x 5n1/4 (196 x 133) D.1054-1900
PROVENANCE C. Jourdeuil (according to a note in the departmental register); Dalton Bequest 1900
LITERATURE Dalton Catalogue, p. 18 (as by Prospero Fontana)
The drawing is later in date than Prospero Fontana (d.1597). It is, as Jacob Bean has suggested in a letter, by or close to Domenico Piola. The subject is the Virgin accompanied by St Mary Magdalene and St Catherine of Alexandria showing a portrait of St Dominic to a Dominican monk at Soriano in 1530. |
