1n 1840, the social reformer, Sir Rowland Hill, worried that many people could not afford the existing cost of postage, introduced the Penny Post, and this Christmas greetings card depicts a small girl mailing a card. For the first time letters were sent pre-paid, at the expense of the sender rather than the recipient.
