Adam and Eve after the Fall

Stained Glass Design
1857 (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

This is one of three designs that the artist Burne-Jones produced for a stained-glass window. Each shows a scene from the Old Testament part of the Bible: Adam and Eve after the Fall, Building the Tower of Babel and King Solomon and the Queen of Sheba.

The window was for the Dining Hall at St Andrew's College at Bradfield in Berkshire. We do not know how this commission came about, but there were various family and business connections between the staff of the college and William Morris and Burne-Jones. Morris is alleged to have helped Burne-Jones with the design. He was the model for the figure of Adam in the first panel.
