This woodcut by Albrecht Dürer (1471-1528) shows a scene from the Bible, when the Virgin Mary, Joseph and the infant Christ fled into Egypt after Joseph was warned in a dream that King Herod was searching for the Christ child in order to have him killed. Winged cherubs watch over the scene from the clouds. Animals are shown hiding in the forest and a cow or an ox follows Joseph and Mary. The forest represents a Middle Eastern landscape, as imagined by a northern European.
