Better known for the production of elaborate glazed terracotta reliefs, the Della Robbia workshop also produced painted floor tiles beginning about 1468. These were typically of large, hexagonal form, and decorated with simple floral designs. This damaged example must have been cut to fit alongside a tiled border.

Five-sided fragment of a hexagonal floor tile, tin-glazed earthenware painted in pale blue, manganese purple and copper green with floral motifs. On the reverse, the edges on four sides are raised.

Probably from the Della Robbia floor in the Bentivoglio Chapel of the Church of San Giacomo Maggiore in Bologna, which was laid between 1486 and 1494, or the Church of San Andrea, Empoli (Toscane, Italy)
