Cameron was born in Glasgow in 1865 and studied at both the Glasgow and Edinburgh Schools of Art, becoming an elected associate of the Royal Society of Painter-Etchers (RE) by 1889. From 1899 he lived in Kippen, Stirlingshire, and the rugged landscapes of Scotland were his main subject of interest. However he did travel to France and Italy making picturesque views such as this. He also spent time in France in the final year of the First World War as a commissioned artist on behalf of the Canadian government. They awared him a Major's commission to paint for the Canadian War Memorials Fund.
