The Prague-born artist Emil Orlik travelled to Japan to understand the woodblock process first-hand. In these three prints he illustrated the key division of labour in Japan at that time. First the artist creates the design in ink using brushes. Then the block cutter carves the design using knives and chisels. Finally the printer, having applied colour onto the block and laid sized paper on top, rubs over the paper using a bamboo pad.
