Artist/Maker
Place of origin

This silk and wool double cloth with a repeat of pears and cherries was designed in about 1880 by Bruce J. Talbert for J. W. & C. Ward. Talbert, an architect and furniture designer, was interested in Asian art and produced textile designs for several firms, including Warners, J. S. Templeton and J. W. & C. Ward. The pattern shows the influence of Japanese design in Britain at this time. The characteristic Japanese simplicity of line and colour is also seen in the work of E. W. Godwin and Christopher Dresser.
