Mould
1950s (made)
Artist/Maker | |
Place of origin |
One of a sequence of casts showing stages in the making of a brooch by Trifari, a leading manufacturer of costume jewellery in Providence, Rhode Island, United States.
The metal alloy (made according to a secret formula held by the company) was poured in a molten state into a two-part rubber mould which had its parts clamped together. The liquid metal entered through a hole at the top of the mould. It ran through channels cut in the rubber to reach the central motif, a leaf and scroll shape, which will be one of the two major elements of the brooch.
This stage shows the point at which all the metal poured into the mould has cooled down. The mould has been opened to show the leaf and all the channels leading to it full of cold metal.
