Caricature

ca. 1905-1906 (drawn)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

This caricature is of Frank Danby performing, probably at the Grand Theatre of Varieties in Hanley in 1905 or 1906. It is one of the many superb caricatures of Edwardian music hall performers that were drawn by the artist George Cooke when he was based at the Grand Theatre. He compiled them in a series of albums.

Frank Danby was never a top-billing star. He was a comedian who, like other variety performers in these albums, would have appeared at numerous music halls throughout the country. He is shown here in a comically mis-buttoned frock-coat and a top hat worn at a rakish angle. He appears to be performing either a song or a one-man sketch. Both were popular acts in music hall about 1900.
