  • BIN-SITAR Wood with ivory, painted gourds and metal strings Probably Pune, Maharashtra 1850-90 IS.47-2002 From the collection of Major Charles Russell Day This is a rare hybrid instrument, unique to the Pune region. It looks like a rudra vina or bin and has the same sequence of strings, but it is smaller, and the moveable frets and flat-faced neck are like the sitar, which was more common by this time. The resonance comes from the hollow neck as well as from the gourds. The paintings mostly show manifestations of the god Vishnu. (15/09/2015)
