This caricature is of Edward Lewis as Anthony Tweedlepunch in Florodora by Owen Hall with music by Leslie Stuart. Lewis performed it at the Theatre Royal, Hanley, during the week of 24 October 1904. It is one of the many superb caricatures of Edwardian music hall performers that were drawn by the artist George Cooke when he was based at the Grand Theatre of Varieties, Hanley. He compiled them in a series of albums.
Florodora was a successful musical about a young girl in search of romance and the restoration of her inheritance. It had opened in London in 1899. This week at Hanley in 1904 was part of a regional tour by Tom Davis’s company, starring Lena Maitland as Dolores. A local reviewer noted that ‘the house screamed with appreciation at the comic element supplied by Mr Edward Lewis’. Lewis also introduced new verses to some of the songs, new jokes and topical references, which went down well with the audience. He died in 1922.
