Place of origin

This 'uchiwa-e' (rigid fan print) design by Hiroshige shows the view from a famous plum garden. It originally stood in what is now part of the grounds of the Myohoji Temple in the Isogo district of Yokohama. Mount Fuji rises in the west behind the gnarled form of a plum tree. A woman leans against a palanquin while her seated companion lights a pipe from a small brazier. The characters on the sign above them read 'senjicha / oyasumidokoro', meaning 'tea / resting place'.
