Place of origin |
One of 12 printed tickets for entertainments organised at the Bazaar for the Female School of Art, South Kensington, 1864. This invitation admits one to a fund-raising event for the school with a racist caricature advertising a 'New Zealand chief'. The figure is shown wearing large earrings, a piupiu or grass skirt, with a crude skull and crossbow motif tattooed on their front, and holding a large wooden club. A white man looks at them in surprise, while another bangs a drum to rouse donations to a third holding a hat out to collection money.
