Teddy Bear

ca. 1920 (manufactured)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

This teddy bear has the classic Steiff trademark of the button pinned into the left ear. Steiff came up with this design in November 1904. An elephant with an S-shaped trunk appeared on the early Steiff buttons. The elephant was later replaced by the name Steiff. Several other manufacturers copied the registered trade-name and mark of the 'Knopf im Ohr' (Button-in-Ear) in the early years of the 20th century. Steiff, however, fought several successful court cases and continue to guard their copyright.
