This is an image of the Crystal Palace in Hyde Park, London. In 1851 it housed the Great Exhibition of the Works of Industry of All Nations. The transept rose to a height of 33 m (108ft) to accommodate fully grown elm trees inside the building. This lithograph shows the building from the south, with visitors strolling by. Large numbers of daytrippers from across the country visited the Great Exhibition. Most of them used the railways, which showed how popular travel excursions were at the time.
