Wartime restrictions on clothing included a ban on the use of silk for civilian purposes. In keeping with the measures imposed, these rayon or 'artifical silk' undergarments are short and fairly slim-fitting with narrow hems, little elastic and no trimmings. Patterns with a tiny repeat, such as this floral design, were used to aviod wastage when cutting.
