1989 (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

These brown leather brogues were made in 1989 from Russian calf leather retrieved from the wreck of a Danish brigantine sunk in Plymouth Sound in 1786. This type of leather was known for its aroma (early leathers were treated with oils of rose and violet) and water resistance. Ten pairs of shoes were made from this leather and were awarded by ballot to bespoke customers at a price of £1,250, the proceeds going to charity.

Bespoke (Object No. 11)
These brogues are made from Russian calf leather retrieved from the wreck of a Danish ship sunk in Plymouth Sound in 1786. A pair of bespoke, handmade shoes like these are, unsurprisingly, not cheap. A small number of bespoke shoemakers in England offer such a luxury service for a global market.
