National Geographic (Capital)

Artist/Maker
Place of origin

This screenprint by Sarah Morris echoes the aesthetic of Piet Mondrian, reducing a space to angular fields of colour. The space is stripped down to its essential elements, creating a codified space, a grid with various planes and focal points with each angle revealing new directions. The image echoes glass-fronted skyscrapers, claustrophobic walls and urban living; it is derived from Morris’s paintings. (See also the portfolio ‘Dulles (Capital)’ 2001, Museum no. E.1066-2003.)

This print is included in a limited-edition box set of prints and photographs, published by SHOWstudio in 2001. The set consists of a range of works by a variety of people from the creative industries, from photographers to pop stars, and the works – a collection of art, artefacts and fashion ephemera – are exclusive to this set. The mix of media and creative practitioners involved in this portfolio reflects the interests of the SHOWstudio project, concerned with contemporary image-making, fashion and multimedia. It could be described as a time capsule or a modern archive.
