Historical context
Hussein Chalayan is one of the major fashion designers working in Britain today. Born in Turkish-owned Cyprus but educated in England, his 1993 graduation show from Central St Martin's School of Art propelled him into the limelight, as he showed decomposing clothes - garments he had buried in his back garden. In Vogue, January 1994, he declared 'I am not interested in fashion' and yet remains at the forefront of contemporary British fashion. His clothes are technically and conceptually complex as well as stylish and wearable.
