Rievaulx Abbey was a 12th-century Cistercian foundation that fell into ruin after the Dissolution in 1538. Buildings like this appealed to artists as symbols of the folly of human endeavour in the face of time and nature. The single figure within a grid of shadows gives a sense of scale. [50 words]
