Place of origin

Mark Podwal is a distinguished artist, illustrator and designer, based in New York. As well as illustrating numerous books, his drawings have appeared in 'The New York Times' since 1972, and his work has been widely reproduced and exhibited.

Podwal's aquatint 'Jerusalem' (9 from an edition of 50) was published in 2003. Its design was inspired by a British Mandate stamp: it incorporates images of the Dome of the Rock and the Citadel in Jerusalem, and is lettered 'Palestine' and 'Israel' in English, Arabic and Hebrew. The re-presentation of the lettering and imagery of the original stamp, issued during the period of the British Mandate (1923-1948), points up the realities of the present political situation. The artist has used the medium of aquatint in subtle ways: while the lines of the composition are boldly defined, there is also a granular deposit which suggests a shifting, shakier landscape. It also evokes the age of the original Mandate stamp. The serrated edge of the 'stamp' is an integral part of the design, echoing shapes of arches, cupolas and rock-forms within the composition.
