Object history
The Encyclopédie, ou Dictionnaire Raisonné des Sciences, des Arts et des Métiers (Encyclopedia, or Dictionary of the Sciences, Arts and Crafts) aimed to provide an overview of the whole of human knowledge. It was edited by Denis Diderot and published in France between 1751 and 1772. Publication of the Encyclopedie was banned in France in 1757, so when Volumes 8-17 were published together in 1765 they bore the imprint of the Swiss town of Neufchastel (Neuchâtel), although it is likely that they were actually published secretly in Paris.
