Furniture ornament

Furniture Ornament
13th early 14th century (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

The multi-headed nage or snake was one of the most popular motifs in Khmer and Thai art, particularly in architectural decoration. Fittings, mostly commonly in bronze, often featured the naga. The function of the finial is uncertain but relief sculptures at the 12th century temple of Ankor Wat in Cambodia depict similar fittings on the shafts of palanquins and parade chairs. This finial was probably produced at one of the Khmer provincial centres in central Thailand, such as Lopburi.
