Printmaking activity: 1908 –1951
Gwen Raverat studied painting at the Slade School of Art from 1908 –1911 but taught herself wood engraving after complaining that: ‘no one at the Slade took the least interest in woodengraving.’ She was the only woman artist to be a founding member of the Society of Wood Engravers, and in 1920 became an Associate of the Royal Society of Painter-Etchers. As a prolific book illustrator, she ensured that her astonishingly skillful wood engravings could be enjoyed by a wider public than ever before.
