Constable and his family frequently rented a house in Hampstead during the summer. In 1821 and 1822 they lodged at 2 Lower Terrace. Their daughter Isabel was born there. This view depicts the neighbouring houses, nos 4 and 3.

| Historical context | In 1822 Constable's exhibits at the Royal Academy included: 'View on the Stour near Dedham' (now in the Huntington Library and Art Gallery, San Marino) (see sketch-book No. 132, p. 52), 'View from the Terrace, Hampstead' (see No. 252) and 'A study of Trees from Nature' (see No. 223).
