Object history
Jane Austen's house in Winchester can be found on 8 College Street, besides the Headmaster of Winchester College's house. There, Jane Austen died at the age of 41 (July 1817) in her sister's arms after suffering several months of illness. It is thought Austen moved to Winchester several years before her death so she could be closer to her doctor. A blue plaque has been installed to commemorate the life of the author of novels such as Pride and Prejudice, Sense and Sensibility and Northanger Abbey.
