Object history | Historical significance: A letter on the Department file for this object from Mary MccGwire (16th Sept 1982) notes that "Alexandrine McEwen... was born in Mottingham, Kent on the 14th October 1876. Died 25 March 1965 in St Mary's Priory, Langford, Vancouver Island, BC. Educated with her sister, Katherine, in Germany but lived and worked in America until the outbreak of World War II when they both went to Victoria BC. .... in a letter written by the Director of the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria in 1965 he said that in their permanent collection they have a "delightful miniature portrait done by Miss A McEwen" which is painted on ivory... this was given by her sister Katherine. Accompanying information also credits the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts and the Pennsylvania Society of Miniature Painters, 11th exhibition". |
