This portrait was painted by Bessie Gibson (Elizabeth Dickson, 1868-1916) of her close friend and fellow artist Edith Marian Bursey. Gibson was an Australian artist who trained in Brisbane and Paris. She may have met Edith Marian Bursey in Paris, where they both studied miniature painting under Madame Debillemont-Chardon, the author of La Miniature sur Ivoire, and exhibited at the Paris Salon. During the Second World War, Gibson relocated to England, where she aided the Red Cross. She returned to Paris after the war and later to Australia in 1947.
