This portrait depicts the miniature painter Magdalena Ross (later Dalton, after her marriage to Sir Edwin Dalton). It was painted by her brother, the miniature painter Sir William Ross. Magdalena Ross exhibited at the Royal Academy between 1820 and 1856. She also painted the only known portrait of Captain Henry Robert Cole, now in the collection of the V&A.

Both siblings were trained in the art of the miniature by their father. Sir William Ross, who painted this miniature, also took lessons with Andrew Robertson, and became one of the most succesful miniature painters of the mid-nineteenth century. He was appointed miniature painter to Queen Victoria in 1837.
