The Buddha stands with his monastic robes covering both shoulders and an ornate cascade of cloth falling from his left shoulder. His right hand is extended in the "pointing" gesture while his left hand pulls the lower part of the robe outward. A band separates the forehead from the tightly curled hair which rises to an ushnisha (topknot) and the feet stand on a lotus placed on a square foot stool decorated with foliate open work.

Object history | This is believed to have been acquired from Mandalay by Colonel Pollard (the donor's husband) while serving in Burma in the late 19th century. Nos. IM 49 to 65-1912 (a collection of Burmese figures representing Gautum Buddha) purchased for £20 from Mrs M M Pollard. Historical significance: Represents the Mandalay Style dating from the period when King Mindon (r. 1853-78) moved his capital to Mandalay in 1857. Indicated by the gentle facial expression and naturalistic drapery with its "fish tail" folds. Purchased from Mrs M M Pollard, 28 Longridge Road, Earl's Court, SW. This acquisition information reflects that found in the Museum records (Asia Department registers and/or Central Inventory) as part of a 2023 provenance research project. RP 1912-2542M |
