VASE ‘FREESIAS’

1686-1900

'American and European Art and Design 1800-1900'

The original inspiration for the founder, Maria Longworth Nichols, and the artists at Rookwood were the impasto 'barbotine' wares shown at the Philadelphia Centennial Exhibition of 1876. Between 1880 and 1900 they graduated from copying this technique to developing their own style, the most important development being the discovery of the air-spray method of applying coloured slips as a finely shaded ground. After decoration these were covered with shiny or matt glazes. This vase is a part of the 'Iris' line: it was purchased from Siegfried Bing’s shop, L’Art Nouveau .
