Historical context | Born in 1809, Dr. John Murray lived and worked in India from 1833-1871. Initially working in the medical service of the East India Company, during his twenty year residency in Agra he was promoted to Deputy Inspector of Hospitals where he led the fight against cholera. Murray's photographic career developed in 1849 until 1865 and during his travels to Sikandra, Fatehpur Sikri and Agra he recorded various historic sites including a series of panoramas of the Taj Mahal in Agra. After his retirement in 1870, Murray returned to England where he continued to publish several medical journals until his death in 1898 . |
